Government Defends Climate Record as PM Skips COP30, Hosting Bid Uncertain
The Albanese government confronted escalating attacks on its climate credentials Tuesday as Coalition leaders accused Labor of failing to reduce emissions after four years in office, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s absence from this week’s United Nations climate summit raised questions about Australia’s commitment to hosting the 2026 conference.
The political clash over emissions data and international engagement highlights fundamental disagreements about both the measurement of climate progress and the government’s strategic priorities as it defends an increasingly complex climate policy position.
Coalition Climate Policy Fractures as Nationals Abandon Net Zero Target
The federal Coalition faces its most significant internal rift in years as the Nationals confirmed abandonment of Australia’s net zero by 2050 emissions target, triggering warnings from senior Liberals that the policy shift amounts to holding “a gun to our head” and could cost crucial urban seats at the next election.
Nationals leader David Littleproud defended his party’s climate policy review on Tuesday, arguing Australia can meet Paris Agreement obligations without committing to net zero emissions while accusing the Labor government of pursuing a “$9 trillion” plan that threatens Medicare and disability services funding.

Ex-General Warns Australia Faces Worst Security Crisis Since WWII, Demands Defense Strategy Overhaul
A former Australian major general used Monday’s Remembrance Day ceremony to issue an urgent warning about national complacency, calling for development of a grand strategy to address what he described as the most dangerous security environment in the Indo-Pacific region since 1941.
Major General Greg Mellick, speaking at the Australian War Memorial before the Governor-General, Prime Minister and other senior officials, said the nation risks repeating historical failures by failing to adequately prepare for potential conflict despite clear warnings from the Defence Strategic Review.
Keating Reveals He Urged Whitlam to Arrest Governor-General After 1975 Dismissal
Former Prime Minister Paul Keating disclosed Tuesday he advised Gough Whitlam to arrest Governor-General John Kerr following the constitutional crisis that ended the Labor government 50 years ago, offering explosive new details about one of Australia’s most traumatic political events in his first filmed interview on the dismissal.
The revelation emerged as Australia marked the half-century anniversary of November 11, 1975, when Kerr dismissed Whitlam’s government and appointed opposition leader Malcolm Fraser as caretaker prime minister, triggering a constitutional crisis that continues to shape Australian politics and debate about the role of the Governor-General.
Trump Lawyers Threaten $1 Billion BBC Lawsuit Over Documentary Edit as Top Executives Resign
Donald Trump’s legal team threatened to sue the BBC for more than $1 billion over misleading editing of a documentary that spliced together two parts of a speech the former president delivered on the day of the Capitol riots, according to reports from the broadcaster.
The legal threat comes days after the BBC’s director general and head of news resigned following publication of a leaked internal memo detailing alleged bias in the organization’s reporting. The chair of the BBC publicly addressed Trump’s lawsuit threat Tuesday, acknowledging mistakes while defending the broadcaster’s journalistic record.

31 celebrities you may not know are nonbinary
The idea that there are only two genders is outdated. Some people don’t identify as exclusively a man or a woman. One of the most common terms used to describe those who break the binary is the umbrella term nonbinary. Gender, like sexuality, is a spectrum. As media coverage becomes more diverse, nonbinary celebrities are breaking down barriers by sharing their stories and just being themselves.
The Human Rights Commission defines nonbinary as including people who identify as neither a man nor a woman, both, somewhere in between, or outside those identities altogether. It also clarifies that many nonbinary people also identify as transgender. While nonbinary people can use the pronouns he/him, she/her, or they/them, not everyone who uses gender-neutral pronouns is nonbinary. As more celebrities in the spotlight highlight the nuances of gender identity and expression, it normalizes these discussions and gives issues affecting the community center stage.

Should Australia make its own nuclear weapons? Some people say that Australia should go nuclear to protect itself because tensions are rising around the world and the Indo-Pacific is becoming less stable. But would that really make us safer, or would it just make the area more dangerous? We look at why countries want nuclear weapons, what it would take for Australia to make one, and the legal, strategic, and practical problems that would make it hard to do so. This is the story of how Australia already has strong deterrence options that don’t cross the nuclear line. It includes the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, AUKUS submarines, long-range strike capabilities, and autonomous defence technology.

Parents Face Legal Risks as Children’s E-Bike Use Sparks Safety Concerns Across Australia
Australian parents considering electric bikes or scooters for their children face complex legal requirements and mounting safety concerns as five child fatalities occurred in Queensland alone last year. Many commercially available e-bikes exceed legal power limits of 250 watts and 25 kilometers per hour, with speed limiters easily unlocked through online tutorials. Experts warn most states require riders to be at least 16 years old for e-bikes and personal mobility devices, though enforcement varies across jurisdictions.
