Opposition Chief Calls Opera House Demonstrations 'Unacceptable' as Jewish Community Marks Attack Anniversary

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley called today for an end to planned Sydney Opera House protests next week, describing the demonstrations near the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks as “completely counterproductive” and rooted in “division and hatred.” Speaking at the Royal Perth Show, Ley said protesters should focus on supporting a US-brokered peace deal rather than gathering at iconic landmarks during a sensitive period for Jewish Australians mourning 1,200 deaths. She also demanded Communications Minister Annika Wells apologize to Australians over Triple-0 emergency call system failures and explain why 2023 review recommendations remain unimplemented as the nation enters bushfire and flood season.

Ley accused Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of abandoning 2023 commitments to provide states with five-year healthcare funding agreements, creating uncertainty for hospital planning on elective surgeries, staffing and ambulance ramping. She called on Western Australia Premier Roger Cook to leverage his relationship with Albanese to secure funding certainty, while Shadow Treasurer Basil Zempilas criticized both federal and state Labor governments over hospital performance in a state he described as economically prosperous enough to deliver better healthcare outcomes. Ley also expressed frustration with government leadership on rising anti-Semitism, noting Jewish four-year-olds now attend kindergarten past locked gates with armed guards.
