Australia’s Assistant Foreign Minister condemned pro-Hamas graffiti discovered on a Melbourne billboard Tuesday as the nation marked two years since the October 7 attacks that killed 1,200 people. Matt Thistlethwaite called the vandalism “disgusting” and “completely insensitive” while acknowledging growing concerns from Jewish Australian organizations demanding stronger government action.
The government has not yet committed to implementing recommendations from its anti-Semitism envoy, with officials stating they want to coordinate responses with an Islamophobia report to ensure laws protect all communities. Jewish representatives have expressed frustration with the delayed response amid ongoing incidents of harassment and violence.
Federal authorities have already criminalized Nazi symbols, strengthened hate speech laws, and launched major police operations including New South Wales’ largest security deployment since the Sydney Olympics. Local working groups bringing together Jewish community leaders and law enforcement have reportedly reduced incidents in some areas.
The anniversary observances focused on remembering victims and supporting Australian Jewish communities still experiencing trauma from the attacks. Officials emphasized national unity while navigating tensions surrounding the ongoing Middle East conflict and its impact on Australian society.
