The United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) have recommended that the Great Barrier Reef be listed as ‘World Heritage In Danger’, as part of a report on their joint reactive reef monitoring mission conducted earlier this year.
In this episode, we interview James Cook University Adjunct Senior Research Fellow Jon C. Day about the UNESCO In Danger recommendation.
Jon was an Australian protected area planner and manager for 39 years; 28 years were in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park until his retirement in 2014.
The report said has called on Australia to improve the water quality that impacts the reef, unsustainable fishing, coastal development and dredging shipping channels and port producers.
