US Tariffs: Australia Pushes for Zero Rate as PM Urges "Considered Approach" to Trump Administration
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has defended his government's diplomatic response to US tariffs, calling for a "considered, calibrated, clear position" when negotiating with the Trump administration. The comments came as the newly announced US tariff policy shifted to apply a blanket 10% rate to all "non-retaliatory" countries.
Speaking at a press conference in Cairns, Albanese emphasized that Australia's best-case scenario remains a zero tariff rate, noting the free trade agreement between the two nations.
"We'll continue to advocate that Australia's tariff rate should be zero. We do not impose tariffs on US goods into Australia." - Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
The Prime Minister contrasted his approach with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton's statements on trade and defense relationships. Albanese referenced former Prime Minister John Howard's intervention, who reportedly advised against linking defense and tariff negotiations.
"What the changes occur from day to day emphasize is the need for a considered, calibrated, clear position when negotiating over these international issues, including with the Trump administration." - Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
Responding to China's offer to work with Australia to boost trade in light of US tariffs, Albanese maintained Australia would pursue trade opportunities globally while prioritizing national interests. He noted that his government's export diversification strategy predated the current tariff dispute.
The Prime Minister highlighted that 80% of global trade does not involve the United States, suggesting opportunities for Australian exporters in other markets. The government has committed $50 million to help affected sectors develop new markets.
