Ukraine executed a surprise drone attack deep within Russian borders, destroying more than 40 military aircraft in what experts are calling one of the most significant strikes of the conflict.
The attack targeted strategic bombers that Russia had been using to launch cruise missiles against Ukrainian positions, representing approximately one-third of Russia's total strategic bomber fleet, according to Phil Orchard, Professor of International Relations at the University of Wollongong in Skynews Afternoon Agenda
"It's incredibly impressive that basically Ukraine managed to destroy over 40 Russian strategic bombers," Orchard said. "That's about a third of their total strategic bomber stock."
At least five Russian air bases were targeted in the coordinated assault, with Russian forces potentially stopping the attacks at three locations, Orchard told reporters. Russia has acknowledged the attacks occurred, marking a rare admission of successful Ukrainian strikes on home territory.
The bombers destroyed in the operation were actively being used to launch cruise missile attacks against Ukraine, making their elimination a significant tactical victory for Ukrainian defense efforts
