Trump Asks Israel to Delay Iran Strike as Nuclear Talks Near Critical Point
President Donald Trump has requested Israel postpone planned military strikes against Iran as Washington pursues what he described as a potentially imminent nuclear agreement with Tehran, according to statements made Friday.
The appeal comes as US media reports suggest Israeli attacks could occur within days, following a United Nations nuclear watchdog determination that Iran has breached its non-proliferation obligations under international agreements.
"As long as I think there is an agreement, I don't want them going in, because I think I would blow it," Trump told reporters when asked about the timing of potential Israeli military action. "We've had very good discussions with Iran. Whether or not we get there, I can't tell you, but it'll happen soon."
Trump indicated negotiations have advanced significantly, stating the US is "fairly close to an agreement" and describing it as "fairly close to a pretty good agreement."
The International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors censured Iran for the first time in 20 years, with Australia among the nations supporting the resolution. The finding adds urgency to diplomatic efforts as tensions escalate across the Middle East.
