S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) closed 140 points lower at 7,612.5, down 1.84% from its session high and 0.35% from its low. In the S&P/ASX 300 (XKO), advancers trailed decliners by 16 to 277.

Last night a 16 year old who has been apprehended was accused of stabbing a bishop at Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley. This is a disturbing incident. There is no place for violence in our community. There is no place for violent extremism. We are a peace loving nation. This is a time to unite, not divide as a community and as a country. Generative AI policies are necessary for Australian media to help them sort through false and misleading information.
Recent research on generative AI images found that only over a third of media organisations have an image-specific AI policy.
The study, led by RMIT University, Washington State University, and the QUT Digital Media Research Centre, interviewed 20 photo editors or related roles from 16 leading public and commercial media organisations in Europe, Australia, and the US about generative AI technologies in visual journalism.
Dr. TJ Thomson, lead researcher and RMIT Senior Lecturer, said while most staff interviewed were concerned about generative AI's impact on misinformation and disinformation, factors like social media's scale and speed of content sharing and algorithmic bias were out of their control. [Read more ]

Fairfield community celebrate success of the new Wetherill Park Return and Earn depot
The Fairfield community celebrated the new Wetherill Park Return and Earn depot's incredible start since opening in November 2023 yesterday (15 Apr).
In six months, local business owner Gaurav Gupta's large stand-alone depot at 5 Allen Place has processed 19 million bottles, cans, and cartons.
State Member for Prospect, Dr Hugh McDermott MP, local charities fundraising through the depot, Exchange for Change, and TOMRA Cleanaway representatives attended.
Since Launch in 2017, Gaurav has been a passionate Return and Earn supporter. He ran many over-the-counter return points through existing businesses, growing his container recycling business to the point he needed new premises.
Since opening the depot, he has offered Return and Earn collection services to individuals, charities, sporting groups, schools, and local businesses, building on his community connections. He gave $1,500 to three Fairfield charities at the event to show his support.
Residents of Fairfield City have recycled over 330 million bottles, cans, and cartons at local drop-off points. [Read more ]
