Russia unleashed its most devastating aerial assault on Ukraine since the war's inception, deploying 800 drones alongside cruise and ballistic missiles in an attack that killed four people in Kyiv and marked the first time government buildings were directly targeted.
Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia Vasyl Myroshnychenko, who returned from Kyiv Monday night after witnessing the aftermath, described the assault as "horrendous" during a Sky News interview Tuesday.
"The attack was horrendous because that was the largest attack, 800 drones, over a dozen crews and ballistic missiles targeting different cities," Myroshnychenko said.
The strike killed four people and injured more than 40 others in the Ukrainian capital, including a child, according to the ambassador's account.
The attack represents a significant escalation in Russian military strategy, with government infrastructure becoming a direct target for the first time since the conflict began nearly three years ago.
Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svaradenko surveyed the damage at a government building that housed her former office from her previous role as deputy prime minister.
"She was a deputy prime minister. That was the office where she sat before she became a prime minister. So she literally was showing the office where she worked for three years before she became a prime minister," Myroshnychenko said.

The massive assault contradicts expectations that incoming U.S. President Donald Trump might facilitate a quick ceasefire or peace agreement.
"It is an escalation because Russians are not demonstrating any clear sign of stopping the war. And they are just intensifying," Myroshnychenko said.
Russian forces are simultaneously intensifying ground operations across multiple fronts, according to the ambassador's assessment.
"We see the intensification on the front lines where they're trying to get a breakthrough in Donetsk and the region, trying to recapture the entire two provinces they don't yet fully control," he said.
Military pressure is also mounting in the Zaporizhia region, indicating coordinated efforts to achieve territorial gains before potential diplomatic intervention.
Myroshnychenko was in Ukraine accompanying New Zealand Defense Minister during an official visit when the attack occurred, providing firsthand observation of the assault's impact.
The ambassador emphasized that military force rather than diplomatic overtures will compel Russia toward negotiations.
"We still have hopes for diplomacy, but the way the diplomacy that Russians understand, it should be reinforced by hard power," Myroshnychenko said.
He specified that "hard power" includes advanced military equipment and defensive systems.
"And by hard power, it's actually military stuff, area defence system, long-range weapons. This is what Russians understand," he said.
The strategy focuses on making warfare economically unsustainable for Russia through increased costs.
"When we make the cost of war so expensive and so high, this is when they're going to come to a table of negotiations," Myroshnychenko said.
Trump's recent statements about potentially imposing additional sanctions on Russia have drawn Ukrainian support, with the ambassador welcoming stronger economic pressure.
"We would welcome president trump's determined action to actually force russia into peace and sanctions is one of the mechanisms of how that could be done," Myroshnychenko said.
He outlined specific sectors where enhanced sanctions could prove effective.
"Sanctions could be imposed on their oil industry and their gas industry on the banking sector and many other sectors so there are many different ways of what u.s government can still do to put pressure on russia," Myroshnychenko said.
The Ukrainian position emphasizes the need for comprehensive pressure campaigns rather than relying solely on diplomatic engagement.
"The only way how we can stop them, we need to put more pressure on Russia. We need to starve their economy. We need to put more sanctions on Russia. We need to provide more military aid to Ukraine so that we could physically stop them," he said.
Life in Kyiv continues despite regular bombardments, though residents face constant psychological stress from unpredictable attacks.
"People are trying to live a life, though they are under attack almost every other day," Myroshnychenko said.
The ambassador's personal connection to the ongoing crisis became evident when discussing his daughter's experience during the latest attack.
"My daughter is currently in Kyiv. She's doing an internship in Kyiv. And, you know, I talked to her yesterday after that attack, and she had a sleepless night," he said.
Personal experience of previous attacks informed his understanding of civilian psychological impact.
"And it's pretty scary, I mean, because I experienced those attacks when I was there in July as well. And that's not easy. It's very intimidating," Myroshnychenko said.
The indiscriminate nature of drone attacks creates constant uncertainty for Kyiv residents.
"It's indiscriminate, could hit any... Absolutely, and it's almost like a plain bingo. You never know when it's going to hit you, and it's what it is," he said.
The massive drone deployment represents technological escalation in Russian military tactics, utilizing unmanned systems for sustained bombardment campaigns.
