Prime Minister Anthony Albanese activated emergency disaster payments Tuesday for flood-ravaged communities across nine New South Wales local government areas, as the death toll from the devastating floods reached five people.

The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment will provide $1,000 for eligible adults and $400 for children who suffered serious impacts including major home damage, injury or loss of loved ones, Albanese announced during a visit to flood-affected Torrey.

"This will take some time, the recovery," Albanese said. "But Australians are resilient, they're tough and we will come through this and we'll come through it together."

The payments become available at 2 p.m. Wednesday for residents in Bellingen, Coffs Harbour, Dungog, Kempsey, Maitland, Midcoast, Nimbaka Valley, Port Macquarie-Hastings and Port Stephens local government areas.
