Australian authorities on Tuesday declared the deadly shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach an ISIS-inspired terrorist attack, revealing that investigators found homemade Islamic State flags and explosive devices in the suspects’ vehicle.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and New South Wales Premier Chris Minns announced the findings at a joint press conference alongside federal and state police commissioners, pledging comprehensive reforms to address what they called an anti-Semitic attack on Jewish Australians celebrating Hanukkah.

The attack was allegedly carried out by a father and son — Sajid Akram, 50, who was killed by police, and Naveed Akram, 24, who remains hospitalized facing significant charges. Both travelled to the Philippines last month, a trip now central to the investigation.

“On Sunday, Jewish Australians were hunted down in broad daylight at an iconic Australian beach,” AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw said.

NSW Police confirmed the firearms used were legally registered to the elder Akram, whose licence was granted in 2023 while his son was reportedly under investigation for extremist ties. Premier Minns announced the state would recall Parliament before Christmas to pass gun law reforms allowing police to deny licences based on criminal intelligence, not just convictions.

Two police officers who confronted the rifle-armed attackers with handguns remain in critical condition. Blood donation appointments in NSW have surged fivefold to 50,000 since the attack.

The investigation continues under the Joint Counter-Terrorism Team, with authorities urging anyone with information to contact 1800 227 228.
