Nationals leader David Littleproud warned Friday that the Albanese government must not sacrifice Australia's biosecurity protocols to secure a trade deal with President Donald Trump, amid reports the administration is considering easing restrictions on U.S. beef imports.
Speaking at a press conference in Brisbane, Littleproud said he was "deeply concerned by reports this morning that the Albanese government is prepared to trade away the biosecurity protocols that we put in place to protect the beef industry here in Australia to try and cut a deal with President Trump."
The opposition agriculture spokesman's comments highlight growing tensions over Australia's response to Trump's threatened tariffs on Australian goods, including steel and agricultural products. The debate centers on whether Australia should compromise its stringent agricultural import standards to avoid potential economic retaliation from the Trump administration.
"We should not take a backward step and concede biosecurity protocols that are protecting the agricultural industry here in Australia," Littleproud told reporters. "Australian farmers should not be collateral in trying to cut a deal with President Trump."
The controversy focuses specifically on traceability requirements for U.S. beef imports. While Australia currently allows beef imports from cattle born in the United States, Littleproud expressed concerns about parts of the American supply chain that source cattle from Mexico and Canada for processing in U.S. facilities.
