Los Angeles police mobilized every officer in the department Tuesday as federal military forces deployed to the city without local coordination, escalating tensions during ongoing immigration enforcement operations and related protests.

Police Chief Jim McDonnell declared a tactical alert, putting the entire Los Angeles Police Department on extended shifts while criticizing the federal deployment of Marines and National Guard troops as creating "logistical challenges" during the volatile situation.

"The introduction of federal military personnel without direct coordination creates logistical challenges and risks confusion during critical incidents," McDonnell said during a press conference Tuesday evening.

The heightened police response comes as Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted at least five raids across the region Tuesday, including operations within Los Angeles city limits, according to Mayor Karen Bass. The raids have sparked daily protests that have repeatedly turned violent, with vandals targeting downtown buildings and confronting officers.

Bass directly challenged the federal operations during her own press conference, calling for an immediate halt to immigration enforcement actions.

"I would say stop the raids. Stop the raids, period," Bass said when asked what she would tell President Donald Trump. "I would say give the power back to our governor, and if we need the National Guard, we can do it in the normal circumstances."
