Liberal Senator Awaits Ministry Call as Party Grapples with Tasmania Election Disaster
Liberal Senator Jonathan Duniam said Tuesday he has not received a call about his position in the party's shadow ministry, as speculation mounts over pending leadership appointments following the coalition's poor electoral performance.
"No calls yet. You'll be the first to know," Duniam told ABC's Afternoon Briefing when asked about potential ministerial positions. The former Shadow Environment Minister said he expects calls will be made "in the next day or two."
Duniam acknowledged the Liberal Party suffered a "disaster result" in Tasmania, where the party was wiped out in the lower house despite securing the final Senate spot with Richard Colbeck's return.
"There's a lot we need to learn from here and to have a swing of, say, 15% against us in the seat of Braddon, which was held so strongly by Gavin Pearce, means there's a lot of learning to do," Duniam said.
The senator said the party received only 1.6 quotas in Tasmania, forcing a major recalibration. "We need to get back in touch with the community and learn from our mistakes in a very big way," he said.
