Here’s what else you need to know to get going and get on with your day.
1️⃣ COALITION DUMPS NET ZERO COMMITMENT AMID INTERNAL PRESSURE
Opposition Leader Susan Ley confirmed the Liberal Party will abandon its commitment to net zero emissions by 2050, marking a dramatic reversal from the Morrison government’s policy. The Coalition will maintain Australia’s Paris Agreement obligations while ditching the longer-term climate target. The decision follows sustained pressure from National Party members and conservative Liberal MPs. Political analysts note the move comes after the Liberals recorded their worst election result since 1943, with climate policy contributing to significant losses in urban seats.
2️⃣ ALBANESE LABELS LIBERAL PARTY “CLOWN SHOW” OVER CLIMATE WARS
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese seized on visible Coalition divisions, calling the opposition “a clown show” during a media conference in Sydney. Albanese pointed to footage of rebel Liberal MPs marching together into their party room as evidence of internal turmoil. The Prime Minister warned the policy shift would damage Australia’s regional relationships, noting Pacific and Southeast Asian neighbors view climate change as an existential threat. Speaking after signing a defence agreement with Indonesia, Albanese said President Prabowo Subianto raised concerns about rising sea levels threatening Jakarta and coastal regions.
3️⃣ GREENS DECLARE COALITION “UNFIT FOR GOVERNMENT” ON CLIMATE
Greens environment spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young delivered a scathing assessment of the Liberal climate policy, calling it “a recipe for economic wrecking and environmental vandalism.” Hanson-Young said the Coalition is “controlled by climate deniers” and cannot be trusted as a partner on environmental legislation. The Greens senator accused the National Party of having “killed the Liberals,” claiming Barnaby Joyce’s influence dragged the party into an “anti-science, anti-environment, anti-economy position.” Hanson-Young called on the Labor government to choose between working with “climate deniers” or the Greens on environmental protection.
4️⃣ AUSTRALIA-INDONESIA FORMALIZE DEFENCE COOPERATION TREATY
Australia and Indonesia signed a significant defence cooperation agreement in Sydney, with Prime Minister Albanese and President Prabowo Subianto formalizing strengthened military ties between the regional neighbors. While specific details remain limited, the treaty represents the most substantial security agreement between the two nations in decades. The agreement comes as Australia navigates complex defence relationships across the Indo-Pacific region and addresses shared concerns about regional security challenges.
5️⃣ NEO-NAZI RALLY PROMPTS CALLS FOR ELECTORAL LAW REVIEW
Prime Minister Albanese condemned an anti-Semitic neo-Nazi demonstration outside New South Wales Parliament, calling it “unequivocally” unacceptable. The incident has sparked debate about whether electoral laws should be strengthened to prevent extremist organizations from registering as official political parties. At least one participant was identified as a South African national, raising questions about visa conditions for foreign nationals spreading hateful ideologies. The NSW government is reviewing the group’s attempt to register as a political party.
