A prominent Labor MP said Tuesday that Australia's decision to impose sanctions on two Israeli ministers represents an "important step forward" and suggested the government should be prepared to target additional officials if Israel's approach doesn't change.
Ed Husic, who has been outspoken in calling for his party to adopt sanctions on Israel, told ABC Afternoon Briefing that the coordinated action by five countries sends a crucial signal to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
"It is important that we work with like-minded countries to send a signal to the Netanyahu government that we need to see better in that part of the world," Husic said during an afternoon briefing interview.
Australia joined Canada, New Zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom in sanctioning Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. The five countries accused the ministers of inciting violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.
