Australia’s political landscape is facing fresh turbulence after weekend anti-immigration rallies ignited controversy and drew national attention. Veteran MP Bob Katter is under pressure after being photographed using a megaphone allegedly linked to a neo-Nazi group during a Townsville protest. Katter has denied any association, but critics, including the Greens, are calling for him to apologize or resign.

The rallies also drew extremist figures, including neo-Nazi leader Thomas Sewell, who was arrested in Melbourne following a confrontation with Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan. Police say Sewell and associates are being investigated over alleged attacks on Camp Sovereignty, a sacred Aboriginal protest site. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Premier Allan both strongly condemned the incidents.

Inside the Labor Party, dissent is emerging over the government’s handling of immigration rhetoric. Backbencher Mary Doyle reportedly questioned Albanese’s remarks suggesting there were “good people” among the rally crowds, a stance that unsettled several MPs. The exchange highlights growing unease within Labor ranks about balancing migration policy with public sentiment.

Meanwhile, aged care policy has sparked an unlikely alliance in the Senate. The Coalition, Greens, and crossbench senators are pressing the government to release 20,000 home support packages immediately, citing cases of elderly Australians waiting up to a year for services. Health Minister Mark Butler defends the delay as essential to implementing long-term reforms, but the upcoming Senate vote could prove politically damaging.

On migration, the Albanese government confirmed permanent visa numbers will remain capped at 185,000 for the 2025-26 financial year. Officials say skilled workers will continue to make up the majority of approvals, but advocates warn the backlog in family visas—now estimated at 100,000—remains unresolved. Former immigration official Abul Rizvi cautioned that the policy risks future legal challenges from separated families.
