Israel expects the release of 20 surviving hostages to begin within hours as a ceasefire with Hamas continues to hold in Gaza, according to Israeli defense officials. The International Committee of the Red Cross will facilitate the handover at the Israel-Gaza border, which must begin by roughly 8 p.m. AEDT under terms of the peace agreement. US President Donald Trump is traveling to Tel Aviv to address Israel’s parliament before heading to Egypt’s Sharm el-Shaikh for an international summit with leaders from more than 20 countries, declaring aboard Air Force One that “the war is over.”

The hostage release will trigger the liberation of nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails, including 250 serving life sentences and approximately 1,700 detained during the war without charges. UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher reported “real progress” in aid delivery since the ceasefire took effect Friday, with cooking gas entering Gaza for the first time since March and Israel approving 190,000 metric tons of supplies. However, hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians returning north have found homes reduced to rubble, while ABC reports militias and Hamas elements are fighting for street control amid retribution killings in Gaza.
