FRUIT & VEG PRICES CLIMB: Avocado Toast Getting Pricier as Produce Inflation Hits 2.8%
Why is your grocery bill getting higher? Fresh produce prices are climbing as seasonal supply constraints impact Australian supermarkets, with fruit and vegetable prices jumping 2.8% in the March quarter.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) revealed today that food and non-alcoholic beverages rose 1.2% in the March quarter, contributing significantly to overall inflation of 0.9% for the period.
Key Takeaways:
Fruit and vegetable prices increased 2.8% due to seasonal supply constraints
Popular items including avocados, mangoes, asparagus, tomatoes, and lettuce saw notable price rises
Annual food inflation now stands at 3.2%, outpacing the overall inflation rate of 2.4%
"The rise of 1.2 per cent in Food and non-alcoholic beverages was driven by fruit and vegetables (+2.8 per cent)," reported Leigh Merrington, ABS acting head of prices statistics.
Major supermarket chains Woolworths and Coles have been adjusting their pricing in response to these supply challenges, with consumers particularly feeling the impact on popular items that feature prominently in Australian households.
The produce price increases are hitting at a time when Australians are already managing significant increases in other essential costs. Housing prices rose 1.7% for the quarter, driven by a 16.3% surge in electricity costs, while education expenses jumped 5.2% with the start of the school year.
"Fruit and vegetables such as avocados, mangoes, asparagus, tomatoes and lettuce saw seasonal price rises following reduced supply," Merrington explained, detailing the specific items driving the produce inflation.
The price increases reflect ongoing challenges in Australia's agricultural sector, which has faced volatile weather conditions and labor shortages affecting harvests and distribution networks. Industry representatives from the National Farmers Federation have noted that these factors continue to create unpredictable supply conditions.
Annual food and non-alcoholic beverage inflation now stands at 3.2%, higher than the overall inflation rate of 2.4% and representing a significant pressure point for household budgets.
Despite these increases, Australia's broader inflation picture shows some signs of moderation. The trimmed mean inflation rate, which excludes extreme price movements, fell to 2.9% annually from 3.3% in the December quarter—its lowest level since December 2021.
