Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has unleashed a blistering critique of the Albanese government's energy policies, claiming Australian families are "going backwards" under Labor's management of the economy and energy sector. Speaking in Newcastle, Dutton outlined an alternative vision centered on fuel price cuts, increased gas supply, and nuclear power.
Key Points:
Dutton claims electricity prices have risen $1,300 despite pre-election promises of $275 reduction
Coalition proposes immediate 25 cents per liter fuel price cut post-election
Opposition energy plan includes East Coast Gas Reserve and nuclear power stations
Dutton warns of blackouts under Labor's "renewables-only" approach
Why It Matters: Energy affordability directly impacts household budgets already stretched by inflation and rising interest rates. With Dutton claiming electricity prices up 32% and gas up 34%, many families face difficult financial choices between essentials. The competing energy visions will shape not only future power bills but also Australia's industrial competitiveness, climate commitments, and energy security for decades to come.
"The Prime Minister promised before the last election on 97 occasions that power prices would go down by $275. Instead, they've gone up by $1,300," Dutton stated during his press conference at a manufacturing facility. "They have been going backwards under this government, and the Prime Minister has walked away today from his commitment to the $275 reduction."
The Opposition Leader's comments highlight the intensifying political battle over cost-of-living issues ahead of the next federal election, with energy prices taking center stage in the economic debate.
Dutton promised immediate relief measures, stating: "One of the ways that we believe that we can help families is by cutting the price of fuel by 25 cents a liter. That will help families immediately, and we will do that immediately after the election."
In a direct challenge to Labor's energy transition strategy, Dutton advocated for nuclear power stations to be built on decommissioned coal plant sites, claiming the approach would preserve jobs and ensure reliable power supply.
"There is a much higher energy IQ in these communities than what we see in the cities," Dutton remarked, adding that his plan would "underpin the economic success of our country for the next century."
The Coalition leader further alleged that Labor's energy strategy is "$263 billion more expensive" than his alternative proposal, claiming his plan is "44% cheaper" while delivering more reliable outcomes.
