Dutton Claims Average Australian Family "$50,000 Worse Off" Under Labor
Opposition leader makes final economic pitch as polls open tomorrow
In a final pre-election address, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has claimed the average Australian family is "$50,000 worse off" under the current government, describing the nation as experiencing "the biggest dip in our living standards in our country's history."
Speaking to media in Western Australia on election eve, Dutton portrayed tomorrow's vote as a "sliding doors moment" for the country. "A Greens Labor government is going to be a disaster for our country and Australians just can't afford three more years of Mr Albanese," Dutton stated.
The Liberal leader's closing pitch centered on immediate economic relief, promising a 25-cent per liter fuel reduction and a $1,200 tax rebate if elected. "That compares to 70 cents a day in 15 months' time and it doesn't cut it. Families need support now and that's exactly what we're doing," he said.
Dutton also highlighted rising costs under the current administration, "The cost of electricity is up by 32%, gas is up by 34%... Groceries have gone up by 30% under this Prime Minister. People are taking items out of their basket, out of their trolley and putting them back onto the shelves."
When pressed on whether he could guarantee that "life will be cheaper" under his leadership—echoing Prime Minister Albanese's previous campaign promise—Dutton responded affirmatively. "I can, and I can do that because life will be cheaper under a coalition government because we'll have got rid of the worst, biggest spending government in 40 years, and we will manage the economy as John Howard and Peter Costello did."
As Australia heads to the polls, Dutton's economic message targets families feeling financial pressure after what he describes as "seven consecutive quarters of negative household growth," a period he characterized as a "household recession."
