Coalition Pledges to Repeal Vehicle Emission Standards, Claims Policy Will Increase Car Prices
The Coalition has announced plans to wind back recently introduced fuel efficiency standards, claiming the measures will substantially increase vehicle prices for Australian families during a cost-of-living crisis.
"Under Labor, you won't just pay more for fuel, you'll pay more for cars as well. The car industry estimates that the best-selling car in Australia, the Toyota RAV4, will be $9,000 more expensive under Labor's family car and ute tax," - Senator James Patterson
During a morning interview, Coalition campaign spokesperson Senator James Patterson labeled the government's policy as a "tax" that would make popular vehicles significantly more expensive, citing estimates that the Ford Ranger would cost $14,000 more under the current standards.
Patterson emphasized that while the Coalition supports electric vehicle adoption, they believe consumer choice should drive the transition rather than government mandates. The fuel efficiency standards introduced by the Labor government aim to reduce vehicle emissions to help meet climate targets, with proponents arguing the policy aligns Australia with international standards and would increase EV availability.
