Coalition Breakdown: Howard Warns "Disunity is Death" as Liberal-National Split Shakes Australian Politics
Former PM Urges Conservative Parties to Reconcile Quickly, Citing Historical Lessons of Coalition Success
In a stark warning to Australia's fracturing conservative alliance, former Prime Minister John Howard has declared the Liberal-National split "a stupid move," emphasising that the parties' "glory days are when we work together."
Speaking in an interview with Nine's A Current Affair, Howard drew on his extensive political experience to caution both parties that prolonged separation would only harden their differences and diminish their electoral prospects.
The veteran statesman's comments come just hours after National Party leader David Littleproud announced his party would formally end their 60-year coalition agreement with the Liberal Party following a devastating defeat in the May 3 federal election that saw Labor secure its largest-ever majority.
