The S&P/ASX 200 closed 3.6 points lower, down 0.05%.
The S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) fell 3.6 points to 7,848.1, its session low. Advancers trailed decliners by 114 to 155 in the S&P/ASX 300 (XKO).
The best performing sector today was Utilities (XUJ) (+0.90%). The market cap leader, Origin Energy (ASX:ORG), rose 1.5%. No news for ORG, but natural gas prices have been rising for a week or two.
Also performing well today was Industrials (XNJ) (+0.49%). Good broad-based gains among key sector constituents, but no real news. [Read more]

Treasurer: Nuclear Power Report "Torpedoes" Peter Dutton's Energy "Fantasy
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has said Opposition Leader Peter Dutton's energy "fantasy" has been "torpedoed" by a new report that shows nuclear power is more expensive than renewables and would take at least 15 years to develop.
The GenCost 2023–24 report, which provides investors with information on the cost of developing future electricity generation in Australia, was delivered on Wednesday by the CSIRO and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).
The costs of transmission lines for renewable energy sources and large-scale nuclear reactors were included in the GenCost report this year for the first time. [Read more]

Australia Confirms H5N1 Case in Child After Returning from India
In a child returning from abroad, Australia has seen the first detection of a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu.
The report is released at the same time that Victorian authorities have confirmed that a bird flu outbreak on an egg farm is actually a highly pathogenic strain rather than the H5N1 strain that is causing widespread concern.
On Wednesday, the Victorian health department announced that a child who had just returned from India to Australia had tested positive for the H5N1 virus. After experiencing a "severe infection," the child, who arrived in Australia in March, has recovered fully, and contact tracing has revealed no additional cases of avian influenza.

Southern Phone's Complaint Handling Failures Result in $244,140 Penalty
AGL Energy owns all of Southern Phone Company Limited (Southern Phone), which was fined $244,140 for not handling consumer complaints in a timely manner.
According to an enquiry by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), Southern Phone violated the laws governing the handling of telecom complaints 77 times between April and June 2023. [Read more]

🇮🇷 Iran. The late president of Iran, the foreign minister, and other individuals lost their lives in a helicopter crash on Sunday had their funerals officiated by the country's highest authority.
🇮🇳 India. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said a member of Bangladesh's ruling party was found murdered in Kolkata more than a week after going missing.

What's needed to educate boys about gender violence

More boys and young men are being taught about gender violence, respect and consent, but better programs and online tools will help.
In my 20s I joined a march of 400 men through the streets of Melbourne, Australia, under banners emphasising our commitment to ending men’s violence against women.
Thirty-plus years ago, that was one of the first times men joined with women and took collective action to end gender-based violence, but these days such action is not so strange.
As the UN marks 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, more men are playing a role in ending men’s violence against women and girls. [Read more]

New La Trobe Indigenous research centre launches
La Trobe University today launched an Indigenous Research Centre to create and flourish Indigenous community research and provide a safe space for First Nations researchers.
The centre is known by the Indigenous name Gabra Biik, Wurruwila Wutja* – meaning Clever Country, Clever People – with words taken from four Indigenous languages.
Part of the University’s Indigenous Strategy launched in October 2023, it is a virtual and practice-based research centre that focusses on projects that promote cultural exchange and learning, fostering mutual respect and understanding.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous) Associate Professor Michael Donovan said the research centre was established through consultation with Indigenous communities served by the University’s campuses across Melbourne and regional Victoria, as well as Indigenous and non-Indigenous La Trobe staff.
