California Governor Challenges Military Deployment in Court as Enforcement Actions Target Latino Communities
Federal Troops Deploy to Los Angeles as Immigration Raids Spark Widespread Protests
President Donald Trump deployed more than 4,000 National Guard members and 700 active-duty Marines to Los Angeles streets this week following immigration enforcement raids that sparked violent protests, escalating a confrontation between federal and state authorities over immigration policy.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday his administration filed emergency court motions to halt the military deployment, calling Trump's use of American troops for domestic law enforcement illegal and unprecedented. The governor accused the president of deliberately inflaming tensions in the nation's second-largest city.
"Donald Trump, without consulting California law enforcement leaders, commandeered 2,000 of our state's National Guard members to deploy on our streets, illegally and for no reason," Newsom said during a press conference. "This brazen abuse of power by a sitting president inflamed a combustible situation, putting our people, our officers, and even our National Guard at risk."
The crisis began over the weekend when federal agents conducted large-scale workplace raids targeting undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles and surrounding areas. Those operations continued as of Tuesday, according to Newsom, who described the enforcement actions as broader than previous administrations' focus on immigrants with serious criminal records.
