Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen announced Wednesday that more than 1,000 public service positions will be eliminated following an independent review of government operations, with officials pledging the cuts will deliver $4 billion in savings while preserving frontline services.
The reductions, which include 332 senior executive and technical specialist roles, respond to recommendations from the Helen Silver report examining efficiency across Victoria’s public sector. Allen stated the government would not accept recommendations affecting healthcare, education, and community safety services.
“Victorian families are watching every dollar in their household budgets and they expect their government to do the same,” Allen said during a press conference Wednesday morning.
The government will consolidate 29 entities and reduce spending on consultants, labour hire, and office accommodation. The Treasurer described the public service as having become “top-heavy” with too many executives and insufficient entry-level positions for career progression and innovation adoption.
The Silver report originally identified $5 billion in potential savings across 78 entity reductions. The government accepted a subset of recommendations, with some adopted in full and others in principle. Specific savings details will be disclosed through the budget process over coming months.
Officials emphasized the restructuring aims to position the Victorian public sector for future challenges while maintaining service delivery to residents.
