Two US Navy aircraft crashed into the South China Sea within 30 minutes of each other Sunday during routine operations, but all five personnel aboard survived and are in stable condition, the Navy said. An F/A-18F Super Hornet jet fighter went down around 2:45 p.m. local time, with both aviators ejecting safely, while three crew members from an MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter were rescued after their aircraft crashed during the same timeframe. Both aircraft were based on the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier, which is returning to Washington state after deployment in the Middle East responding to Houthi rebel attacks on commercial shipping.

The causes of both crashes remain under investigation, the Navy said in a statement. The incidents add to a series of mishaps involving US carrier-based aircraft in recent months, including three separate F/A-18 incidents aboard the USS Harry S Truman between December and May, though no fatalities occurred in any of those events. The Navy has not released investigation results from the earlier incidents. The Nimitz is on its final deployment before decommissioning.
