Two people were taken into custody Sunday evening after gunshots were fired at Bondi Beach, with emergency services responding to multiple victims at the scene, New South Wales police said.
Police described the situation as a “developing incident” and urged members of the public to avoid the area and take shelter. Eyewitnesses reported seeing two men dressed in black firing weapons near the beach carpark.
A Jewish Hanukkah celebration was reportedly underway at the time of the shooting. Authorities have not confirmed whether the event was targeted or disclosed the number of casualties.
NSW Premier Chris Minns called the reports and images emerging from Bondi “deeply distressing” and urged residents to follow official advice as emergency services continue to respond.
Police said further information would be provided as it becomes available.
