Ten people are dead, including one gunman, after a shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday afternoon, with a second shooter in custody in critical condition, according to New South Wales Police.
The attack occurred around 6:30 p.m. local time at Bondi Park playground, where a public Chanukah celebration was underway on the first night of the eight-day Jewish festival. Witnesses described two black-clad gunmen firing from a footbridge overlooking the gathering.
Police confirmed there is no longer an active threat to the public but urged residents to avoid the area as officers work to disarm an improvised explosive device found at the scene.
NSW Ambulance transported 16 patients to hospitals across Sydney, including St Vincent’s, Royal Prince Alfred, and Sydney Children’s Hospital. Two police officers were also injured in the incident.
Witness Richard Hasten, who was attending the event with his grandson, described hearing gunshots and seeing a woman bleeding nearby. Another witness called the scene “absolute hell on Earth,” estimating the shooting lasted approximately 10 minutes.
Police are appealing for anyone with mobile phone or dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers. Authorities have warned the public about misinformation circulating online, including unverified reports of shootings in other parts of Sydney.
Allegra Spender, Member of Parliament for Wentworth, called the attack “horrifying,” adding: “This is not the Australia that we know and love.”
The casualty count is expected to rise as the operation continues, police said.
