Telstra has identified dozens of older Samsung Galaxy mobile devices that fail to properly connect to backup networks for Triple Zero emergency calls, requiring affected customers to update or replace their phones within 28 days or face network disconnection. The issue affects approximately 11 Samsung models requiring replacement and 60 additional models that can be fixed through software updates, with the telecommunications company legally obligated under federal regulations to block non-compliant devices from Australian mobile networks.
The problem occurs when a user’s primary mobile network is unavailable and the device attempts to automatically connect to an alternative network—specifically Vodafone—to place an emergency call. Telstra discovered the issue during routine device testing and has notified Samsung and other network operators. The company is contacting affected customers directly via email or SMS with specific instructions, while establishing dedicated helplines for consumer and small business customers. Optus has issued similar warnings, and Samsung states it is working with carrier partners to resolve the issue across all affected devices.
