A South African man who attended a Neo-Nazi rally outside New South Wales parliament house has had his visa revoked by the federal government, marking the first confirmed action against participants in the November 8 demonstration. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke cancelled Matthew Gruter’s visa, stating that guests who “show hatred and wreck the household” would be told “it’s time to go home.”
Gruter was photographed in the front row among approximately 60 men at the protest organized by the National Socialist Network, a known Neo-Nazi group. Protesters displayed a banner reading “Abolish the Jewish lobby” and repeatedly chanted “blood and honour,” a slogan associated with the Hitler Youth. Gruter, who arrived in Australia in early 2022 on a sponsored work visa, was reportedly employed by engineering firm Aurecon, though the company has not confirmed his employment status.
NSW Premier Chris Minns announced that changes to hate speech laws could be introduced to parliament this week in response to the rally. “There’s no such thing as a part-time Nazi,” Minns said. “You can’t hold down a job somewhere else in civic life and expect to be free from scrutiny by joining one of these horrible organisations.” The maskless nature of the protest enabled ABC NEWS Verify to identify several attendees, with investigations into other participants ongoing.
