The Queensland Supreme Court has set aside a controversial government directive that banned public doctors from prescribing puberty blockers to new adolescent patients with gender dysphoria. Justice Peter Callaghan ruled today that Queensland Health Director-General Dr. David Rosengren issued the January directive without properly consulting the state’s hospital and health services, violating required administrative procedures.

The legal challenge was brought by the mother of a 14-year-old transgender teenager, who argued the directive was unlawful based on procedural grounds rather than medical merits. Health service chief executives were informed of the ban during a Teams meeting at the same time Health Minister Tim Nicholls publicly announced it, demonstrating the lack of consultation. The ruling does not address whether puberty blockers should be available to minors, focusing solely on whether proper legal processes were followed in implementing the health directive.
