Optus customers across the Hunter Valley region lost mobile voice and data services Wednesday afternoon following a fibre break that has disrupted telecommunications infrastructure in Port Stephens, Maitland and surrounding areas. The telecommunications provider confirmed at 3 p.m. AEDT that some customers cannot access Triple Zero emergency services while technicians work to repair the damaged fibre network.

The outage affects mobile connectivity across a region with an estimated combined population exceeding 165,000 residents. Optus issued a public apology and stated technicians are onsite working to restore services, though the company has not provided an estimated restoration timeline. The loss of Triple Zero access raises critical public safety concerns in areas where mobile networks serve as primary communication infrastructure for emergency response coordination.
