King Charles has removed Prince Andrew’s royal title and ordered him to vacate the Royal Lodge on the Windsor estate, Buckingham Palace announced Friday. The 65-year-old will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor rather than prince, a title he held since birth as the son of Queen Elizabeth II. He must surrender the lease on his 30-room mansion and relocate to private accommodation on the Sandringham Estate, with the king funding the move privately.
The unprecedented action follows renewed pressure over Andrew’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Recent revelations include emails showing Andrew maintained contact with Epstein longer than previously disclosed and the posthumous publication of Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s memoir detailing allegations against him. Buckingham Palace said the censures were “deemed necessary” despite Andrew’s continued denials, adding that “their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.” Andrew paid millions in a 2022 out-of-court settlement with Giuffre, who died by suicide in April 2025, though he admitted no wrongdoing.
