Japan’s parliament elected ultraconservative Sanae Takaichi as the nation’s first female prime minister Tuesday, ending three months of political turmoil after her Liberal Democratic Party secured a last-minute coalition agreement with the rightwing Japan Innovation Party. Takaichi, 64, won 237 votes in the lower house — four more than the required majority — replacing Shigeru Ishiba, who resigned after just one year in office following devastating election losses in July.

The historic election comes amid significant political uncertainty, as Takaichi’s untested coalition lacks a majority in both parliamentary houses and will require ongoing negotiations with opposition groups to pass legislation. A protégé of assassinated former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Takaichi faces immediate challenges including addressing public frustration over rising prices, preparing for diplomatic talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, and navigating regional summits — all while managing a fragile government coalition formed after the LDP lost its longtime centrist partner, Komeito, over corruption scandals and concerns about Takaichi’s nationalist positions.
