Ashton Hurn was unanimously elected leader of South Australia’s Liberal Party on Monday, taking control of the opposition with just 103 days remaining before the state’s March 21 election.
The first-term lawmaker and former health spokesperson replaces Vincent Tarzia, who resigned Friday after 16 months in the role, citing the position’s challenges. Hurn becomes only the second woman to lead the state Liberals, following Isobel Redmond.
The leadership change marks the third time in under two years the party has changed leaders while trailing the governing Labor Party in polls. Hurn acknowledged the difficult path ahead, saying the party faces “an absolute mountain to climb” before the election.
“My team and I are absolutely committed to making sure that we get to work for the people of South Australia and that we provide them with a real choice at the next election,” Hurn said outside Parliament.
Hurn said she would outline her policy platform at a press conference later Monday. The sudden leadership transition comes as Labor Premier Peter Malinauskas holds a comfortable majority following his party’s 2022 victory.
