The House of Representatives voted Wednesday to end the nation’s longest government shutdown, sending legislation to President Donald Trump that will restore paychecks to federal workers and reopen agencies after a 43-day funding lapse.

The Republican-controlled chamber approved the measure 222-209 along party lines, with the Senate having already passed the bill. The White House confirmed Trump, who previously called the legislation “a very big victory,” would sign it into law later Wednesday, officially ending the shutdown that left federal workers without multiple paychecks and caused widespread disruptions at airports and government offices nationwide.

The impasse centered on Democratic demands to extend an enhanced tax credit that reduces health coverage costs through Affordable Care Act marketplaces. Republicans refused to include the provision, arguing it represented a separate policy dispute. House lawmakers had not been in legislative session since Sept. 19, when Speaker Mike Johnson sent them home after passing a short-term spending measure and placing responsibility on the Senate to act.

“Government shutdowns don’t work. They never achieve the objective that you announce,” said Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., during floor debate. Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries warned the dispute remained unresolved, saying “this fight is not over.” The shutdown forced families to rely on food banks and created delays for travelers as the partisan divisions deepened heading into the new congressional session.
