The U.S. House of Representatives voted Wednesday to compel the public release of documents from the federal investigation into late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, sending the measure to an uncertain future in the Senate.
The Epstein Files Transparency Act passed with bipartisan support, with all Democrats and all but one Republican voting in favor. The legislation would require the Department of Justice to publish all unclassified documents relating to its investigation and prosecution of Epstein and co-offender Ghislaine Maxwell, including flight logs and names of individuals referenced in connection with the case.
The vote came after a rare discharge petition forced House leadership to bring the bill to the floor, creating divisions within the Republican Party. President Donald Trump had labeled longtime ally Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene a “traitor” after she signed the petition alongside fellow Republicans Lauren Boebert, Nancy Mace and Thomas Massie, plus all House Democrats.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said he expects the Senate to amend the bill to protect innocent witnesses and family members before any final vote. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has not indicated whether he will bring the measure to the floor.
Louisiana Republican Clay Higgins cast the lone vote against the bill, warning it would “reveal and injure thousands of innocent people” including witnesses and family members.
Epstein died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking in what was ruled a suicide. Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence for grooming and trafficking offenses.
