Democrat Zohran Mamdani won New York City’s mayoral race Tuesday, defeating independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa to become the city’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest in over a century.
The Associated Press called the race at 9:34 p.m. EST after the 34-year-old state assemblymember secured victory with a campaign focused on cost-of-living issues that drove the highest mayoral election turnout since 1969, with more than 2 million voters casting ballots.
Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist who won the Democratic primary by 12 points earlier this year, overcame attacks from President Donald Trump, who falsely labeled him a communist and threatened to withhold federal funds from the city. In an unusual move, Trump endorsed Cuomo—who resigned as governor in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations—on the eve of the election, bypassing the Republican nominee. Exit polling showed 6 in 10 New York City voters cited cost of living as their top concern, with 7 in 10 calling housing costs a major problem. Mamdani will replace Mayor Eric Adams, who dropped his reelection bid in September, and take office in January.
