NSW Police Commissioner Malcolm Arthur Lanyon declared Sunday’s Bondi Beach shooting a terrorist incident at 9:36 p.m., confirming at least 12 people dead and 29 injured after two gunmen opened fire on more than 1,000 people gathered for a Hanukkah celebration at Archer Park.
Police discovered improvised explosive devices in a vehicle on Campbell Parade linked to one of the attackers. The Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit is working to secure the vehicle. One gunman is dead and a second is in custody in serious condition.
Commissioner Lanyon confirmed the deceased attacker was previously known to authorities, though she described this knowledge as “very little.” ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess said the individual was known to his agency “but not in an immediate threat perspective.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, speaking after an emergency National Security Committee meeting, called the attack “an act of evil anti-Semitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation.”
