Amazon Web Services experienced a significant outage Monday affecting dozens of major platforms including Snapchat, Duolingo, Roblox and several UK banks, leaving millions of users unable to access critical services. The cloud computing giant identified a potential root cause in its US-EAST-1 region and said engineers are working on multiple parallel recovery paths.
The disruption, which began around 3:11 a.m. ET, affected AWS’s DynamoDB APIs and triggered cascading failures across platforms dependent on the infrastructure. Downdetector logged more than 5,000 outage reports from Snapchat users within the first hour, while customers of Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland reported being unable to access online banking services. The outage also impacted workplace tools including Zoom and Slack, gaming platforms Fortnite and Roblox, and government services including the UK’s HMRC tax authority website. AWS, which generated $108 billion in revenue last year, provides cloud computing infrastructure for millions of websites and applications globally.
