Australia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate climbed to 4.5 percent in September, up from a revised 4.3 percent in August, marking the highest level recorded since November 2021, according to data released Thursday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The increase reflects 34,000 additional unemployed Australians actively seeking work, while total employment simultaneously grew by 15,000 people during the same period. The participation rate rose 0.1 percentage points to 67.0 percent, though it remains below the record high of 67.2 percent reached earlier this year.
Sean Crick, ABS head of labour statistics, noted that both male and female unemployment contributed to the September increase, with unemployed males rising by 24,000 to 370,000 and unemployed females increasing by 10,000 to 314,000. Full-time employment grew by 9,000 positions while part-time employment added 6,000 jobs. The underutilisation rate, which combines unemployment and underemployment, rose 0.4 percentage points to 10.4 percent. Hours worked increased by 0.5 percent, outpacing the 0.1 percent rise in employment, while the employment-to-population ratio held steady at 64.0 percent.
