An Australian Defence Force soldier died Wednesday evening following a single-vehicle rollover at the Townsville Field Training Centre in North Queensland, Defence Minister Richard Marles confirmed Thursday. The incident occurred at approximately 6:42 p.m. on Hervey Range Road, about 50 kilometers west of Townsville. Two other soldiers involved in the crash were hospitalized with chest, abdominal and back injuries before being released. Marles identified the personnel as members of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, the army’s armoured infantry battalion based at Kapyong Lines.

Marles called the death a “tragic loss” and said the sacrifice of service personnel “weighs heavily on us all.” He acknowledged the incident’s impact on Townsville, describing it as a “small, tight-knit community” deeply connected to the Australian Defence Force. The Defence Force said its focus remains on supporting the families of those involved and requested privacy be respected during the ongoing investigation. No names have been released. The Townsville Field Training Centre features specialized urban operations facilities designed to simulate combat environments for military training exercises.
