An Australian P-8A Poseidon surveillance aircraft was involved in what defense officials called an “unsafe and unprofessional interaction” with a Chinese Su-35 fighter jet over the South China Sea on Sunday, according to a statement released Monday by the Australian government. The Chinese aircraft released flares in close proximity to the Australian plane during a routine maritime patrol in international airspace, posing risk to the Royal Australian Air Force crew, though no injuries or aircraft damage were reported.

The incident marks the latest in a series of similar encounters between Australian and Chinese military forces this year, including comparable confrontations in February and May. Australia stated it expects all countries, including China, to operate their militaries safely and professionally, emphasizing that the Australian Defence Force has conducted maritime surveillance activities in the region for decades in accordance with international law and the right to freedom of navigation in international waters and airspace.
