The Australian government will begin a nationwide education campaign Sunday ahead of a Dec. 10 law banning children under 16 from major social media platforms, Communications Minister Anika Wells announced Friday. The campaign includes television, radio and digital messaging, along with 43 free webinars and tailored resources for schools, as officials prepare families for what Wells called a policy that “will change a generation.” eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said information packs are now available at esafety.gov.au, with materials developed in consultation with mental health organizations including Beyond Blue and Headspace.
The announcement comes as Australian schools report deepfake image-based abuse incidents at least weekly, with reports doubling over 18 months, according to Inman Grant. Officials confirmed New South Wales police are investigating deepfake images circulating in Sydney schools this week. The government is also working to restrict “nudify apps” before they reach app stores, moving beyond case-by-case content removal. Wells said meetings with major platforms are ongoing and emphasized the government expects “significant change, not perfection” when enforcement begins in less than two months.
