Australia and Indonesia have substantively concluded negotiations on a new bilateral security treaty, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Wednesday, marking what he called a “watershed moment” in relations between the two nations.
The agreement commits both countries to regular consultation on security threats and potential joint responses, signaling the closest defense partnership between the neighbors in decades. Albanese made the announcement alongside Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Royal Australian Naval Base in Sydney during Prabowo’s first state visit to Australia.
“This treaty is a recognition from both our nations that the best way to secure that peace and stability is by acting together,” Albanese said. “It signals a new era in the Australia-Indonesia relationship.”
The treaty will require Australia and Indonesia to consult at leader and ministerial levels on security matters, identify mutually beneficial security activities, and consider joint or individual responses when either country’s security is threatened.
“This treaty represents a major extension of our existing security and defense cooperation,” Albanese said. “It shows the relationship is as strong as it has ever been.”
Prabowo, who arrived in Australia for his first state visit despite being banned from the country for years over human rights concerns, framed the agreement through neighborly obligations.
“We cannot choose our neighbors, especially countries like us,” Prabowo said. “It is our destiny to be direct neighbors. So let us face our destiny with the best of intentions.”
The Indonesian president invoked a local saying: “When we face an emergency, it is our neighbor that will help us. Maybe our relatives will remain far away. But our neighbors are the closest.”
