Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese landed in Seoul Wednesday for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, underscoring the critical importance of regional trade relationships to Australia’s economic future. Speaking to journalists on arrival, Albanese highlighted that 75% of Australia’s trade occurs with APEC nations and that one in four Australian jobs depends on trade. He described the Asia-Pacific as “the fastest growing region of the world in human history” and stated the summit presents an opportunity to advance Australia’s national interest through economic diplomacy.
Beyond economic discussions, Albanese announced plans to visit a Seoul war cemetery where 281 Australian soldiers from the Korean War are buried. The Prime Minister will pay respects to the approximately 17,000 Australian military personnel who served on the Korean Peninsula between 1950 and 1953 as part of United Nations forces. The visit signals Australia’s long-standing security and diplomatic commitments in the region, complementing the economic focus of the APEC gathering which brings together 21 member economies representing roughly 60% of global GDP.
