Two ground staff members died early Monday after an Emirates cargo plane arriving from Dubai veered off the runway and crashed into the sea at Hong Kong International Airport, striking a ground-service vehicle and throwing both workers into the water, according to Hong Kong police.

The Boeing 747 freighter, operated by Turkish carrier Air ACT as Emirates SkyCargo flight EK9788, landed on the north runway at approximately 3:53 a.m. local time before skidding sharply left midway through its landing roll and plunging partially into waters off the runway. Firefighters rescued both male staff members from the vehicle around 5 a.m., but one was pronounced dead at the scene and the other died after being transported unconscious to North Lantau Hospital. The four crew members aboard the aircraft escaped uninjured. The airport’s north runway remains closed as Hong Kong’s Civil Aviation Department leads the investigation into the incident, with authorities examining flight data showing the plane traveling at roughly 49 knots when it struck the water.
