A “targeted” terrorist attack at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach left 16 people dead and dozens injured Sunday night, Australian authorities confirmed. Police identified the attackers as a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son, stating the father was killed at the scene while the son remains hospitalized in critical condition.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon declared the shooting a terrorist act and confirmed the older gunman was a licensed firearms holder. Investigators also discovered and disarmed two improvised explosive devices at the scene.
State and federal leaders condemned the violence as an act of anti-Semitism, with the Prime Minister describing it as “pure evil”. Police have launched “Operation Shelter” to increase security around Jewish community sites across the state.
