Australian Labor MP Calls for Sanctions on Israeli Officials After PM Condemns Aid Restrictions
A former Middle East negotiator told ABC News Australia the Gaza war has become "pointless" after achieving its military objectives, as Australian officials consider joining international sanctions against Israeli government members and ceasefire talks continue.
Aaron David Miller, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace who spent decades negotiating Israeli-Palestinian agreements, said the conflict now serves primarily political rather than military purposes.
"I think this is a pointless war which has already achieved its military objective, which is undermine and destroy Hamas as an effective military organization," Miller said during the ABC interview. "The reality is that the prime minister has political interests and political requirements, which is one of the reasons that the war continues."
Miller's assessment comes as Australia faces pressure to take stronger action against Israel over aid blockages and continued military operations in Gaza. Former Labor Minister Ed Husic, speaking to ABC, urged the Australian government to prepare targeted sanctions similar to those being considered by other nations.
